natives of Swatow speaking a language not understood by the great majority of the population and having few possible connections in the Colony, the number of such native being comparatively few, could within a year have established such a connection that they could find purchasers for over 10,000 taels of raw opium a month, and mostly in comparatively small quantities. In former cases which I have investigated this

year, the sales were on a wholesale scale but this firm

would sell, if asked, quantities under 10 taels.

Supplies of Opium, In the districts from which the firm

drew its supplies the market seems to have been cleared of

the old crop by June, and there was some delay in bringing forward the new crop, which stopped business for a few weeks. The agent in Hofhow assures his principals that supplies of

the new crop are likely to be very abundant and of excellent

quality and at a reasonable price. The amounts likely to

be put on the market as soon as the new crop arrived are

estimated at no less than 800,000 teels per month. There is constant reference to the arrival of big consignments in Yamchow, Pakhoi or Hoihow, such as 20,000 or 40,000 taels

at once. Except in the early part of the year it appears to have been impossible to obtain any Persian Opium in the

places mentioned. At one time the firm sent an order to their agent in Hoinow for Bengal opium, and the reply comes that there is no Bengal to be obtained, and there is no

possibility of filling the order.
